Sedans V/S Crossovers: Which is better?

Charles Combs

Crossovers and sedans are two of the most popular vehicle body styles in the market today. Crossovers have gained so much popularity in the last few years that they are now displacing sedans as the vehicle of choice for a vast majority of drivers (even more so after the introduction of the subcompact crossover segment).

But does that mean you follow suit? Or should you stand your ground as a sedan lover? Here are 3 reasons to stick with the classic sedan, and three others to embrace the winds of change and join the subcompact crossover craze:

Four Reasons to Buy the Sedan:

  1. Better Fuel Economy: The sedan’s low-set suspension and a lighter frame promises better fuel economy compared to small crossovers.

  2. More Affordable: The bulkier build, body cladding and the raised ride height of an SUV or compact usually comes at a higher price, making it more expensive. On the other hand, a sedan at the same level is less expensive for the manufacturer to build, giving you more bang for your buck, and additional tech & safety features if you put in some extra money.

  3. Superior Handling: The sedan’s agile build compared to bulky crossovers, offers far better handling and easy maneuvering.

  4. Improved Aerodynamics: Thanks to their sleek design, sedans tend to be more aerodynamic. This feature also makes for better fuel economy.

Four Reasons to Buy the Small Crossover

  1. Better Utility: One of the biggest selling points of a crossover is its utility. You can get enough interior space to rival a large SUV without the hassle of driving around a cumbersome behemoth every single day.

  2. Extra Ground Clearance: Many drivers prefer to buy a crossover for the additional ground clearance that smaller vehicles like sedans and hatchbacks lack. This extra height makes crossovers perfect for driving on tougher trails without worrying about damaging the undercarriage.

  3. Better View of the Road: The raised suspension on crossovers make for better visibility and a more commanding view of the road.

  4. Available All-Wheel Drive: One of the biggest advantages that sets crossovers apart from most sedans is the availability of all-wheel drives. This offers the driver better handling and control in bad weather conditions and rough terrains where most traditional cars would falter.
