Personal Loans: What Can You Use Them For?

Joseph McGriff

Personal loans are well known for their versatility. You can use these funds for many purposes like:

Debt consolidation: If your current creditors are charging you very high rates of interest, you can take out a personal loan to consolidate your old debts under a new and lower rate of interest.

But once you open your existing lines of credit by paying back what you owe, avoid using them again. Credit debt can be a slippery slope if not handled with care.

Medical bills: If you find yourself facing a huge pile of medical bills, you can consider taking out a personal loan to pay them off. But before taking out a loan, you can reach out to your healthcare provider and ask for discounts or an installment-based payback plan (this can help you avoid any additional interest that a personal loan may charge).

If none of these strategies work, pay back the bills with a personal loan.

Necessary home repairs: Although borrowing money for crucial home repairs and projects like termite issues or a damaged roof is common, experts recommend checking if your homeowner’s insurance covers the expense. But borrowing money to get a new pool built or install custom stained glass windows? Not such a great idea. Make sure you put in great thought and see if the expense is an absolute necessity.

Wedding costs: A wedding can turn out to be quite an expensive affair and most people don’t have piles of money lying around to pay for it. If you don’t have any money saved up, taking out a personal loan may seem like a great idea. Why? Because the interest rate charged on a personal loan may be lower than what you end up paying if you use a credit card.

Expensive consumer goods: If you don’t have any cash saved up to make big purchases like a computer, expensive mattresses, jewelry, or major appliances, you can use a personal loan to bring them home.

Moving expenses: Hiring professional packers and movers to box up your belongings and transport them to your new home can easily cost you thousands of dollars. If you don’t have enough money in the back to finance this expense, a personal loan can come to your rescue.
